What’s in my Makeup Bag? + New Series

BannereLet’s start by saying this…I am not a beauty blogger. I blog about fashion, style and even in some cases…DIY projects. However, when it comes to beauty, I let the professionals educate me on that! I have learned a ton from watching YouTube videos, reading beauty blogs and talking to various beauty bloggers. I’ve even started thinking about using some sort of eyelash serum thanks to these videos, one of them mentioned something called Xlash? Point is, as a whole I let the expert beauty bloggers take the reigns with this subject as a whole.

However, I do have a super cute new makeup bag that I won in a #TeamPineapple giveaway…and I want to share it. I am going to give you a little looksey into my makeup bag and detail some of my favourite products that I am currently using and have found very useful over the summer.

I have tried a lot of different products since I began wearing makeup, but the products I am going to show you today are my favourite so far!! I change up the products I use pretty frequently, but this summer, I have really stuck by these brands and I will tell you why!

Brushes: e.l.f., Bella Piere, & mark.

You can never have too many makeup brushes! I have found the best brushes for such a great price! There are some that I have owned for a while, and some that I have collected this summer. mark. is an Avon brand, and I have been using their brushes for years! They maintain their soft quality and don’t shed.

I recently began to use e.l.f. brushes – mainly because they are great brushes for such a great price online! Bella Piere is a new brand that I have discovered, and only because I purchased a “Starter contouring kit” which came with a little kabuki brush. It has proved to be really good at blending my bronzer and blush together! The purple blending sponge is probably the best thing I have ever purchased – beauty wise. I will never apply foundation with a brush again after using this sponge. I picked this little beauty up at Shoppers Drug Mart about two months ago, and I haven’t stopped using it since! Such a staple.

Foundation, Mascara, Blush, and Bronzer: Avon & e.l.f.

This summer, I kept it really light on the foundation. Besides, you don’t want to clog up your make up when you’re sweating in the sun! However, it’s nice to smooth everything out…which is why I opt for the e.l.f. Studio Moisturizing Foundation. I actually began using the e.l.f. Studio Flawless Finish Foundation, and when I ran out, I resorted to using the stick! Well, I loooved it! It’s a lot faster to throw on and blend!

I have always used Avon mascara. This particular line that Avon sells – Big and Daring Waterproof Mascara – is perfect for my lashes. It makes them full and long and I don’t even have to curl them!! Plus, what other option is there than waterproof mascara?? This e.l.f. Studio Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder has been a staple in my makeup bag this summer. Even though it is for contouring, I like to use it just to give my skin a little glow. Dusted on lightly (because it is rather heavy), it gives the perfect finish!

Eyeliner, Highlighter and Setting Powder: mark., e.l.f., & Rimmel

Eyeliner isn’t part of my every day routine because I have not nailed a quick way to do it just yet, but when I do put it on, I always use mark. on the edge Hookup liquid eyeliner. I definitely love liquid as opposed to pencil eyeliner, and this brand makes a great product! I have used many different brands and I find that this product lasts the longest on my eyes, without rubbing away!

This highlighter is more than just a highlighter. I would actually use the term “highlighter” loosely, as it really doesn’t serve just one purpose. The e.l.f. Essential Shimmering Facial Whip can be used on your lips, eyelids and cheeks – anywhere that needs a little shimmer, to be honest. I have used the facial whip in all three of those places, and I have never been disappointed! This Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder is absolutely essential and definitely an everyday product for me. It is the last product I brush across my face before I rush out the door. It keeps the shine away from my nose, forehead and cheeks and keeps everything looking perfect!

Concealer and Primer: e.l.f. & Rimmel

Lately, (as you can see) I have been really into e.l.f. product, and the first product that turned me onto this amazing brand, was the e.l.f. Studio Complete Coverage Concealer palette that comes with four different shades. You can use the four different shades to transition between seasons, but I like to use each shade depending on the look I am going for that day. Typically, I use the lightest shade to brighten up under my eyes and cover my slight dark circles…but I have also used the darker shades as a slight contour!

Probably the most important thing in my makeup bag is my Rimmel Fix and Perfect Pro Primer. I make sure to apply a good layer of primer before I put anything on my face. My skin has definitely thanked me for it, and that’s why it holds a place in my makeup bag always. There are many great primers out there, but this one is well priced and always available at any drug store!

I love makeup, but have never really been amazing at it. These products that I have featured in my bag today really have helped me step my game up! You can get all of these products by clicking on the embedded links throughout my post – I have made sure to link pretty much everything to make it easy for you to find!

So if I’m not a beauty blogger…than why am I doing this? Good question! I am writing on the beauty topic because, my darlings, I am kicking off a Pearls and Polkadots original series called “Beautiful Beauty Bloggers”!! Yes, that’s right – for the next five days, I will be hosting five lovely beauty bloggers who are going to tell us about select topics! I am so excited and cannot wait to make this a regular series for Pearls and Polkadots!

We’ll have to see where it goes! Stay tuned throughout this week for more – I want this series to become a showcase for beauty bloggers out there to show off their talent and knowledge (because what is style without beauty?).

Cheers beautiful people! I am out for the week, but these ladies will make sure you get your daily Pearls and Polkadots fix! Who is posting tomorrow?

Who is posting tomorrow? You will meet Ashley! Have fun!

What’s in my Clutch? Wedding Edition.

I’m hearing wedding bells this week! This weekend, my cousin is getting married and the family is completely immersed in everything wedding! Which is why, I am taking this opportunity to share my wedding clutch with you. Although the wedding is two days away, I have had my outfit planned for about two months now, right down to the pearl earrings (look forward to that outfit details post!!). When it comes to going to a high profile event, you need to make sure you have the essentials!!

Being a woman, we get kind of a pass on bringing a million things with us through the very convenient use of a purse or clutch. However, when you only have a limited amount of space, you must maximize and choose your items wisely! Well, fear no longer, because today I will be spilling the contents of my wedding clutch this weekend, and giving you a little preview as to what exactly I will be taking along with me on Saturday!

Keeping Beautiful: Foundation Stick, Lipstick, a Compact & Bobby Pins

This E.L.F. foundation stick is the perfect thing to keep in a bag, let alone a clutch. Weddings go on for hours, into the wee hours of the morning, and chances are, your make-up will not last as long as you want it to. That’s why, it’s good to have something to touch it up with!! What’s great about this foundation stick, is it is creamy and smooth, which allows you to blend easily with your fingers (just remember to wash your hands!! We don’t want make up stains on any of the linens now, do we?).

Who are we kidding? Do we really go anywhere without some kind of lip blam, stick or gloss? Well, I don’t. I have to have something that will keep my lips looking plump and fresh!! I am absolutely obsessed with Avon lip stick, which may come as a shock to some of you,  but trust me when I say this lip stick lasts. I usually don’t have to reapply throughout the work day, which is just what you need!! Plus, the colour is pretty cute too!

Now, this may or may not be applicable to some of you ladies. I, for one, like to be able to whip out my compact and use the mirror to check my teeth (crucial after eating salad), or do a quick make up check without having to go to the powder room. Although I will say this as a side note…if you do happen to need a touch up or pick the green out of your teeth, please excuse yourself!! (Excuse the mini-etiquette lesson). Having that compact, just makes those little side checks easier so you can keep the party going throughout the night!

This is also an optional item for some people, but I tend to keep a few bobby pins in any purse that I carry, only because I (or someone else) may need one at some point. I often curl my hair or put it up, and bobby pins tend to get lost along the way. In the event that that crucial pin holding your style in place falls out – not to worry, you have a spare! Like I said, totally optional, but for me…I like to have backups.

Quick Fixes: Sewing Kit, Tide-to-Go stick, Scotch Mints

Okay, I have to say this is probably the most important thing to have in your clutch when attending a wedding. Whether the bride’s dress rips, or someone’s pants get split down the middle, whoever has that oopsie malfunction will thank the heavens, and more importantly you, for coming to the rescue!! Let’s just say, the last wedding I was at, it would have been nice to have a needle and thread to save the day…

Another type of oopsie? Stains. I will be wearing mint green to the party this weekend and heaven forbid I spill something on my dress during one of the six courses…I want to be prepared. Now, I am a relatively clean eater, but being that I spilled coffee yesterday morning right down the front of my baby blue shirt (and actually had to purchase this exact stick), I will be playing it safe at the wedding!! I would highly recommend this addition to your clutch. Warning: the Tide-to-Go stick works poorly on white clothing. In my experience, it has left a yellow-tinged stain…so beware of how light the fabric is should you choose to use it.

Beside the fact that this little mint tin is super cute and feeds my Disney obsession, it is so important to keep fresh breath when you are interacting with hundreds of people. I prefer to keep scotch mints in my purse because I don’t necessarily like to be chewing gum in front of so many people. That may sound a tad extreme, but when you get caught chomping on a piece of gum – mid chew – in one of the candid wedding photos (which is then shared on Facebook about a thousand times)…you will be horrified. Trust me…pictures say a thousand words and you don’t want it to say “I chew with my mouth open!!”

The Oh-so-Important Stuff: Bill Fold/Wallet, Kleenex, your Phone

Being that most weddings are cash free or open bar, you don’t necessarily need to carry a wallet with you. I like to keep my crucial cards with me in the event that I need to find my own way home, or something unexpected comes up. If you don’t keep cards on you, you should have roughly $20, just in case. This bill-fold is sold at J.Crew and has been my best friend for the past six months I have owned it. It’s so great when you don’t want to carry a huge wallet with you, and also when switching bags!

Emotions run high at weddings, and that’s why you want to have something to catch those tears with. The best thing to have on you at a wedding are tissues!  Plus, this will help you keep your make up intact, so it doesn’t all wash away during the ceremony!!

This may seem a little obvious…but you need to make sure you have room in your clutch for your phone!! You don’t want to have it out the entire wedding (because how rude would that be?) and that most often gets overlooked when packing a bag. You also want to make sure you have something to take photos with!! So make sure you bring it along with you (and that it fits) because this is probably one of the most important items on this essentials round up!

Well, there you go – you have your essentials listed out for you right here! So if you are going to a wedding, make sure you pack accordingly so you are prepared for the best and the worst!! Having these items in your clutch will guarantee you a worry-free, fun-filled night! Which, of course, I plan to have on Saturday! Now I just can’t wait to detail my beautiful little number I put together for this exciting event – make sure you check back on Monday! This clutch is one that I picked up from Call it Spring – it comes in black too!

I am always curious to see what people keep in their bags, and even more interested to see how their clutch is organized! Do you have any essentials you bring to weddings? Leave them in the comments below!!

What’s in my Bag?

One of the benefits of being a woman is accessories! I take full advantage of the fact that I can bring pretty much anything I want with me, anywhere I go, using the aid of a cute and stylish tote. Being that the school year has come to a close and my summer work term has begun, I decided to switch bags and gather my “purse essentials”. My bag can get super messy, but in keeping with the theme of organization this week, I am setting the goal for the summer to be to keep my bag clean. However, this post is going to go through each item that I carry in my bag on a daily basis!

This is my newest edition to my family of bags. Currently, it is unavailable online in black, but there are other versions in different colours! The bag is called the Wellesley Rachelle by Kate Spade New York.

Daily Essentials: iPhone, gum, lipstick, concealer, wallet.

I think this first essential is self-explanatory. Every bag should hold a special place for your cell phone, and all my bags do. But I would like to point out how cute this polka dot Kate Spade New York phone case that I found at Winners is! You can tell how much I love Kate Spade! But if you are not all about the designer products or don’t want to spend as much on a phone case like I did, it may be best to check out sites that allow you to create custom phone cases, if this is something you prefer. At least this way you get to choose your design. Anyway, this past year, I have hopped on the lipstick train. My main providers for my love of lipstick are Avon and Revelon. Both are great and colourful (just the way I like them!). I always make sure I have gum in my bag at all times. Being a coffee addict, I need to make sure that the coffee breath doesn’t linger for long…and Dentyne Rush is the solution. In addition to lipstick, I also carry my “Extra lasting” Avon concealer just in case I start to look a tad tired. In the past, I have had troubles with wallets (not enough pockets, too big, too small, etc.) but this wallet from mark. by Avon is the best wallet ever created! Unlimited pockets, two zippers on the outer sides and it all snaps together making it fit in almost any normal bag!!

Summer Essentials: Sunglasses, Kobo, EOS lip balm.

As we approach the summer, a few more essentials must be added to my bag. First of all, when the sun is shining, you need to protect your eyes. I always carry a pair of good sunglasses in my bag (plus they are a great accessory!). The summer opens up a lot more free time – no studying, no essays to write…therefore, I have a lot more time to read! My mini-Kobo makes that really easy. It’s small, compact and fits into any bag I own so I can read on that long, boring commute to work! My last “summer essential” is an EOS lip balm. Technically, this could be a daily essential, but I tend to use EOS more in the summer to keep from getting burnt lips (not fun..)

“Non-essentials” found in my Bag: Nail Kit, Samsung tablet, JCrew pouch & billfold, book.

I try not to pack my bag full of things I don’t need, but sometimes, things end up at the bottom of my purse for reasons I cannot remember. The nail kit that I carry is zebra print and contains everything from a nail file to nail scissors. It comes in handy from time to time, but not totally essential. My Samsung tablet can often be found in my purse for long trips. I have movies, games, books, and magazines that keep me busy for long car rides or even on the commuter train. My JCrew pouch & matching billfold is probably my favourite little clutch set that I have ever owned. I keep my change in the pouch along with any other loose receipts or papers (better than crumpled up at the bottom of the bag) and the billfold makes a quick coffee run at work easy.

The last “non-essential” found in my bag currently, would be my hardcover book. I am currently reading “How to be a Hepburn, in a Hilton World” by Jordan Christie. I am only one chapter in, but so far so good! Maybe I will do a post on my favourite books in the future (noted!).

Well, that is what is in my bag! Hard to believe it all fits in there so nicely! Enjoy!
