The Preppy Side of Pinterest: Christmas Looks

THE PREPPY SIDE OF PINTEREST-

I have been a bit absent these past couple of days. As we head into finals season, I have been absolutely swamped with assignments, studying and trying to maintain my sanity. So, I took a couple of days off. BUT, I am returning today with some great Christmas looks for you…straight from Pinterest (just the inspiration you need this holiday season). A few weeks ago, I showed you my top three must-have looks for this holiday season.

Today, I want to show you some of the preppy looks that I am loving this month…

Classic Red Tartan – I have a thing for plaid and this look screams classic Christmas. Red tartan is the best tartan, and here, paired with a black sweater, a string of pearls, matching red tartan heels and a dark crimson lip is perfect. This season, midi skirts are completely in. Many people think that midi skirts are for tall people, and tall people only. Not true at all – try the length with a pair of heels to boost your height, and you are golden!

Dressy dressy at the Mall – There is nothing wrong with sporting a skirt and tights around town for the holidays. Just because the snow has come to stay (which we don’t have by the way…), doesn’t mean you can’t show off those legs in the Winter and get your cute on! This outfit below emphasizes the importance of layers. The turtleneck under the plaid flannel, which is under the wool pea coat. Not to mention, the hunter green Hunter boots…simply perfection.

Hunter boots *-*-read coat, green skirt, and that plaid blouse! i LOVE this outfit...I really would like to look like this girl.:

The Laid back Lumberjack – Okay, so maybe this isn’t what a lumberjack would sport in the forest, but this look is incredibly cute. From the plaid flannel vest to the staple Bean Boots that she is sporting…I love it all. This look is super easy to recreate and perfect for getting the house ready for the family, hunting to buy the Christmas tree, or even running errands at the mall.

Fur on Plaid – This is an adorable look as well. The tartan, as you know, is already a favourite of mine. However, the fur is a new one for me. I just recently added a faux fur vest to my closet, and I have yet to sport it…but this is one of my inspirational outfits on Pinterest, which is why I am including it today. It is an easy and simple look to recreate with black pants or leggings…throw on some cute heels, or maybe some over the knee boots – voila!

That’s it for today. There is more to come this week hopefully. I love Christmas, and I love writing about Christmas style. Especially when I get to go through my inspirational boards…look forward to more outfit details coming soon (I know Mondays are usually details days…)

Falling for Fall Fashion: Trends to Watch For!

FALLING FOR FALL FASHIONCozy sweaters. Football games. Pumpkin Spice Lattes. It’s all around the corner because we are inching closer and closer to that season that everybody loves. This past weekend, I opened up my closet packed full of my winter clothing and I got excited all over again. Not to mention all of the latest trends quickly being stocked in stores (bring on those J.Crew cable knits!!).

With a new Fall season quickly approaching, I am starting to look for those key pieces to add to my wardrobe. Of course, I have a marvelous collections of sweaters, oxfords, and of course my heeled boots…but who doesn’t love to go through the new catalogs? Today, I want to show you some of the trends that make me squeal with excitement for Fall 2015.

I sifted through a bunch of my favourite blogs and catalogs in order to bring you these to-die-for trends in this post:

Cozy Knits. I am in love with my sweater collection, and I am always looking for more to add to my closet. This season, we are seeing a lot of cowel neck and over-sized sweaters in neutral tones. Personally, I love cowel necks because it eliminates the need for a big scarf, and it looks nice tucked into your pea coat. Plus, an over-sized sweater can easily be paired with jeans and a great pair of boots!

Dark shaded tights. Fall brings cooler weather, and although the temperature may not be below 0, you still want to make sure you are covered enough to keep those goose bumps from rising. But, do you need to give up wearing those cute mini’s? Absolutely not! Get yourself a pair of tights! Even better, get yourself tights in darker shades. Why? It seriously transforms your summer pieces. To date, I have only worn black tights, but this fall, I want to move into shades of wine, maroon, and navy. Too many possibilities…

Knee High Boots. I am extremely pick when it comes to the boots that I wear. In fact, it took me the entire Fall 2014 season to find a pair I actually loved. You really can never have too many pairs of knee highs. There are so many ways to wear them that investing in a good quality pair would be well worth it!! A trend that I am super into this season is the knee high boots, with the socks pulled up. I think it’s an interesting way to lengthen your leg – especially if the boot has a heel, it helps the short girls out and elongates the leg…which all of us short gals want!

Felt Hats. I have a slight obsession with hats in general. They add a bit of spunk to an outfit and this season, hats are right in style. A black felt hat is the perfect way to top off that perfect fall look. However, I am loving the colour “wine” (or maroon). This colour coordinates with black and neutrals extremely well and is a hat of this colour is really versatile. Felt hats are year round pieces that can be styled in many different ways. Whether you are dressing up a casual look (like a white tee and jeans), or are working it for Fall (with an over-sized sweater and tights), it looks chic and fabulous!

Well there you have it! I am really falling for these Fall trends and can’t wait for the cool season to grace us with it’s presence. Can the leaves turn already?! Stay tuned for an upcoming post I am planning that will address the Fall trends…for men!

What are your favourite Fall trends? Are you excited for this cool season? Let me know in the comments below!

Closet Organization 101: Drab to Fab

Banner_FINAL

When it comes to storing clothing, you must be smart! We would all love to have a closet the size of our bedrooms, but for most people, that is not a reality. Over the years, I have accumulated many articles of clothing and unfortunately, my closet was suffering, which was evident by the bar beginning to bend from the heavy weight. It was at that moment that I realized…it was time to re-organize.

Re-organizing truly is a pain…it’s a huge project and you really need to clear a day or two when you know you will have the time to finish what you start. Last week, I hopped on Pinterest and went pin-crazy for all things closet organization which led me to my ultimate design. This past weekend was the perfect weekend to set my plan in motion. With the help of my Dad and left over cabinets, poles and screws around the house…we put together a closet for the low cost of $50.00!!

So how did I do this? I am going to give you the lowdown on making over your closet, step by step:

1. Research, research, research!

If you aren’t on Pinterest, go set up an account now. You will not regret it. Before any big project, you have to know what you are getting yourself into. Not only do you need time, you need to know what you are doing and what you want the results to be.

2. Set a budget.

Having someone come in and make-over your closet can cost you hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars. You absolutely do not need to spend that much money on a closet (wouldn’t you rather spend it on clothing!?). Wal-Mart or any other large department/home organization store, sells pre-made kits and shelving. With that being said, this is not a $20.00 project. Be prepared to dish out a reasonable amount or use an old shelving unit and fashion your own “kit” (all you’ll need to go get is the hardware!)

3. Choose your design.

After sifting through Pinterest and setting your budget, you must choose the design to follow. You may find actual plans that you can download for free online, but don’t count on that. Use your imagination and think of how you can replicate your design idea with the things you have or can get for a good deal. Keep in mind that you need to choose a design that fits the space you have available to you in your closet. I have a double closet and it is reasonably deep, so I had a pretty fair amount of space to work with. The design I chose to replicate was one I found on Pinterest, of course:

4. Clear out the closet and get to work!

Once everything is cleared out of your closet, the relief is unreal. Not only is it satisfying, it is equally horrifying. Yes, your closet is clean…but your room will be a mess! The pile of clothing on my bed was scary, I contemplated if there would actually be enough space. If you have accounted for the amount of clothing you have in your design, you should be fine!

5. Organize, organize, organize!

This is the fun part! Putting everything back! If you are doing this in one day or over the course of a weekend, space Step 4 and 5 out. Take a break in between because both are HUGE jobs. This one in particular, is where your organization skills come into play. This is your closet, so organize it the best way you see fit! I like grouping my clothing by colour and by type of clothing. Blouses stay together, coats stay together, dresses stay together…but that’s just me! Let your obsessive, hair-brain, OCD kick in and work towards the goal of a clean, organized, and beautiful closet! The finished product will be picture worthy!

BEFORE & AFTER

Before: Not only was the bar bending, there was no space for shoes and space was not being maximized!

After: With the cubed shelves and double bars, space is maximized and the floor stays clean

My closet went from drab to fab in just one week! Hopefully, you will be able to use these steps to effectively maximize the space in your closet! You will not regret it (I sure don’t!). Below, I have included more shots of my new fab closet!
