The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift Guide

It’s that time of year again…the time when we honour all of our hardworking, sweet, caring and loving mothers who have always been there for us time and time again. This is one of my favourite days because I get to spend the entire day with my mother and grandmother – quality time is the best time! With Mother’s Day right around the corner, it’s time to go out and get a nice gift for that special lady. This gift guide, hopefully will spark some ideas…

ZAPPOS PINK & WHITE SCARF / KATE SPADE ‘MOM KNOWS BEST’ ELEPHANT NECKLACE / CHLOE FRAGRANCE / KENDRA SCOTT DROP EARRINGS / KATE SPADE ‘MOM KNOWS BEST’ GIRAFFE NECKLACE / OLD NAVY TASSEL SADDLE PURSE / NEIMAN MARCUS BUCKET BAG / CHLOE SUNGLASSES / CHLOE LOVE STORY BODY LOTION / JONATHAN ADLER CANDLE / JCPENNEY DECO PILLOW

MY FAVOURITES

I personally believe that any Mom would love nothing more than quality time with their children and a giant hug on Mother’s Day, but it is nice to show your appreciation and love for them through a present that you really know they will love! Here are my current faves for this year:

Kate Spade ‘Mom Knows Best’ Elephant Necklace

Kate_Spade_Necklace

Kate Spade makes the best jewelry, right? I love how simple the pieces are and this one necklace is one step better than your typical ‘MOM’ necklace spelled out. This is representative of your relationship and I love how the trunks of the elephants are linked – something I know my momma would love!!

Neiman Marcus Bucket Bag

Neiman_Marcus_Bag

I am really loving the colour blush these days. Moms tend to carry a ton of stuff in their bags – that’s not a criticism, it’s the truth. Moms carry everything from mints, to their favourite book (at least, my momma does!). This is the perfect bag for the Mom who carries her life in her bag – and the colour is totally in style!

Chloe Sunglasses

Sunnies

The colour is a tad out there…I mean, I typically go for the black sunglasses, but these are progressive and fun! Chloe makes the best sunnies and these are so much fun for the sunny season!!

Mother’s Day is an important day out of the year – it’s a time for us to stop and think about the women who work so hard to make our lives amazing! They are the women who raised us and so this is a day for us to give back to them!! Call up your Mom and book a brunch table because this day should be the most special out of the entire year for you and your momma!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide For Her

Ladies, the Valentine’s Day countdown is at 5 days! 5 days until the lovey dovey day and although I am spending it with family and friends this year…some of you need to get cracking on your V-Day wishlists (did that sound a little spoiled? Nah!). With Valentine’s Day in less than a week, now is the time to slip this little list to your S.O. so he knows exactly what to do! With this gift guide, you really can’t go wrong with all of these one of these lovely presents!

Valentine's Day Gift Guide For Her - Pearls and Polkadots

Nars Blush / Miss Dior Perfume / Kate Spade Gold Watch / Kate Spade Travel Mug / UGG Slippers / Love Lock Necklace / Kate Spade Confetti Print Wallet (sold out, similar here) / Kate Spade Secret Admirer Tote / Shoptiques Heart Sweatshirt

My Favourites

All of these gifts are marvelous and I kind of want every single thing on this list (hehe!), but naturally, I do have a few that I have taken a liking to more than others…

NARS Blush

Valentine's Day Gift Guide For Her - Pearls and Polkadots

I have taken a liking to NARS products lately. The blush is so smooth and creamy and I just love the different shades it comes in. Personally, I do not own any NARS products yet, but the blush will be the first I buy…because look how sexy that colour is! How could I not pick myself up a little blush?

Kate Spade Gold Watch

Valentine's Day Gift Guide For Her - Pearls and Polkadots

I don’t wear watches…really because I don’t have one that is comfortable on my wrist. I have tried this watch on before and I want it so badly (don’t you wish you had an extra $200 lying around?). The gold detail is beautiful (#teamgold!!) and I love the pink secondhand (that is my favourite part…).

UGG Slippers

Valentine's Day Gift Guide For Her - Pearls and Polkadots

Slippers are my weakness. I wear them in the house all the time because they keep my feet toasty warm! They come in so many different types, sizes, shapes, colours, materials…you name it. However, I love the lined slippers and more importantly, the higher quality slippers. Because I wear them SO much, I need them to last a long time!!

Valentine’s Day is such a fun time of year (despite if you have an S.O. or not) because you get to celebrate the ones you love! It certainly is not a time to splurge on material items, but it doesn’t hurt to receive (and give!!) a little gift from that special someone!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

NYE Clutch Essentials!

New Year’s Eve is TONIGHT everyone – can you believe it? It’s amazing how fast each year goes by! Tonight, I will be celebrating with friends out on the town and for going out, I have assembled the perfect NYE clutch! You need to make sure that you are prepared for that fun night out with friends and today, I am going to show you exactly what you should pack in your bag for the big night!

NYE Clutch Essentials

For a night out, you don’t need to bring a lot – but there are a few things that you may want while out past midnight! Some are optional, others are completely necessary!

NYE Clutch Essentials - Pearls and Polkadots

My NYE clutch for 2015!

iPhone (or your phone) – I know, I know – the iPhone 5S is an older model…but the main point is: Make sure you have your phone on NYE! Plain and simple it’s safe, and fun because you will want to take tons of pictures!

Blinged out Bobby Pins – Whether they are blinged out or not, I always make sure I have a couple of pins in my bag. You never know when your hair may need to be pinned back. These pins are the perfect bobby pins for a great NYE night because they add sparkle instantly!

Setting Powder – Rimmel‘s translucent setting powder has been a saving grace for me on many occasions! It minimizes the shine on your face, and is quick to apply, meaning you only need a smidge! When you are amongst a lot of people, sweat may become a problem – but this powder takes that sweaty glow right off your face, so you are looking perfect all night long!

Make up Brush – You need something to apply the setting powder with! This is really the only reason that you would pack a make up brush in your clutch! This is my favourite brush right now by e.l.f. cosmetics. It’s light, fresh looking and cleans really easily!

Matte Lipstick – I have a lipstick obsession right now which falls into two categories: nudes and mattes. This creamy matte, nude lipstick that I am loving right now is by Mabelline and is in the shade “Daringly Nude”. This has been my go-to, daily shade this past month! For the big NYE, you will need to pack your lipstick for touch ups throughout the night!

Magic Wallet – Unfortunately, this is not in stores anymore (which is why I didn’t feature it up above), however this is what I carry my necessary cards in when I go out. It’s simple, small and fits in pretty much any clutch. You will want something to carry your cards in so you don’t lose them!!

BONUS: Portable Phone Charger – This is something that I have been meaning to purchase (but always forget to). There is a great, compact, gold-coloured portable phone charger at Lord & Taylor – perfect for NYE! There is nothing worse than a dead phone (plus it’s not too safe on NYE!) Charge up with this cute gold portable charger!

My clutch is not being sold online, but the one linked up above is very similar and equally as cute!

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers: Top Ten mark.Avon + Avon products I use

5Today is the last day of Pearls and Polkadots’ second volume of “Beautiful Beauty Bloggers” series and although I’m sad to end this wonderful series, I am so happy to provide to you my own beauty post! I love doing series like this with wonderful guest posters and I have found such great beauty blogs through this…which is why I did the second volume!

I am not a beauty blogger by any standards. However, I am a woman who wears and uses makeup on a daily basis, and being a fan of style and fashion, I like to use makeup to compliment my fashion as well. Whether you are big into makeup or not, these products can be used in a multitude of ways, and I am going to show you which ones I love best today.

Why choose mark.Avon/Avon makeup?

I began using these brands in high school when my Mom signed on as a brand rep. She sells it, so not only did I receive a discount, I had a primary expert on the different products that were available. Once I began to use it (near the beginning of my makeup wearing days), I fell in love with a lot of products in the catalogue. I order regularly and love the quality that Avon provides to me.

Eyes

I don’t tend to rock the eye make up too, too often. Why? I find it to be a hassle, and since I am not amazing at applying eye makeup, I often skip this step in my routine. However, when I am feeling up to it and have a little time, I jump to these products by mark.Avon and Avon.

“On the Edge” Liquid Eyeliner – this liquid liner is my absolute go to. I love the Cleo colour and how it looks so smooth on my eyes. I am terrible with pencil eyeliner, so I converted to liquid liner a long, long time ago. I have tried numerous liquid liners, but this is by far my favourite.

The best thing about this liner is how easy it is to take off. I hate when makeup doesn’t come off easily – I don’t like spending twenty minutes before bed chipping my makeup off, but this eyeliner slides right off with a little eye makeup remover, and in five minutes, you are ready for bed!

“Big & Daring” Volume Mascara – I have been using this mascara for about a year now (not the same one, of course) and I haven’t had any reason to switch. This mascara leaves my lashes nice and full and doesn’t weight them down.

Time and time again, I have used mascaras that either clump or feels heavy on my lashes. It almost mimics a “cakey” feeling on my lids, and that is something that I like to avoid (who doesn’t?). This mascara is light and full which is a highlight for me…

True Colour Eye shadow Quad – this is probably my favourite eye product. Why? Well I will tell you. This eye shadow quad palette is numbered. This is great for a makeup-newbie like me, because I know what can go where. This quad comes in all different shades. My favourite is “Mocha Latte” (not pictured).

Cheeks

I love to wear blush and bronzer (especially in the Winter) to give my face some colour. When the sun goes away (or the hot sun, I should say), the colour is pretty much drained from my face and I rely heavily on products like blush and bronzer to liven up my skin!

Glow Bronzing Pearls – this product is fabulous. If you don’t like a really heavy applied bronzer, this is your product. Because the bronzer is distributed in pearl form, it doesn’t cake on your brush, resulting in a heavy tanned look on your skin. I find that this gives great colour on the skin (and depending on how much you put on the apples of your cheeks, you don’t necessarily need blush).

Touch & Go Shimmer Cream Cubes – I don’t use this product as much anymore…but this was my go-to blush in high school. Why don’t I use it as much anymore? Well, I am lazy and haven’t ordered a new one yet…but this pretty much replaces the need for blush.

Because it comes in a multitude of coloured cubes, it gives you not just one shade, it gives you multiple. It also provides the opportunity for you to mix them together, coming up with a unique shimmer shade for your cheeks. Similar to the bronzing pearls, the cream cubes go on lightly and blend the colour into your skin – just what you want!

Face

Unfortunately, my most favourite foundation was discontinued by Avon last year and I have been scrambling and jumping around to try and find one that I love just as much (have not accomplished that yet). However, there are still some facial products from this brand that I use on a daily basis.

Extra Lasting Concealer – I only tend to wear concealer on my ‘running on four hours of sleep’ days. However, it’s not just for those times you need to cover up your dark circles. If I am going out, I will use it as a highlighter under my eyes to brighten up my skin (a trick I learned from my fellow beauty bloggers…).

This concealer really does what it says it does – lasts. I don’t have to worry about reapplying throughout the day, it stays exactly where I put it on in the morning (provided I don’t actually touch my skin…but that goes without saying for any type or brand of makeup).

MagiX Face Perfecter SPF 20 – my face tends to experience shine in multiple areas on my face (bridge of my nose, apples of my cheeks, chin), and this is the product to minimizing it. I like to use a combination of this face perfector, as well as a setting powder on my entire face.

I have been using this for awhile now. This is a staple product for me in the Summer…why? The SPF that is included within the cream. I am so pasty and subject to burning frequently, so SPF in any facial product I use is extremely important. SPF 20 for my face is good and keeps me from burning to a crisp in the hot, hot sun.

Smooth Minerals Powder Foundation – I don’t use this as my primary foundation. I find that I need liquid foundation to cover all my imperfections (that I see, at least) and powder doesn’t work for that as well (on me). However, I like using this as a finishing powder. I always buy this powder in a slightly lighter shade than my foundation, so that afterwards I can dust it on lightly and it will lighten my skin a bit.

It’s interesting because one day, I will put on the bronzer to tan myself…but other days, I don’t really feel like appearing tan or “bronzed”, so I use the lighter powder foundation to finish off my light skin look.

Lips

I cannot leave the house without a little lip colour. Lip colour is extremely important to me for my outfit posts that I do daily for my Instagram account (click here to check it out). I love rocking different colours each day like red, hot pink, even peach! Avon is my primary source for lipstick, since I love how it glides onto my lips so easily and it lasts as well!

Ultra Colour Lipstick – Whether I am rocking a matte or satin lipstick, this is the stick I go for. I have colours such as “Matte Ruby”, “Berry Berry Nice”, or “Rosedew”…and all three are the perfect shades. I was recently looking for classic red lipstick, and the colour that I couldn’t stop wearing was Avon’s “Matte Ruby” – it is my favourite red stick and I have been using it non-stop this year (not pictured).

Ultra Colour Indulgence Lip Colour – I don’t really prefer this over my previous lip pick,  but I will say that this stick’s colour tends to come out more vibrantly. Whereas the colours are a bit muted in the Ultra Colour Lipstick, this lip colour is very bright and ‘in your face’. They both last equally well, but my favourite feature of this colour stick is how compact it is.

It fits right into your clutch, whereas the Ultra Colour Lipstick is more bulky (more suited for large totes or makeup bags).

There are my top ten favourites…

I love collecting makeup (even though I am not the best at doing it) and so happy that I got to host these four lovely ladies this week! Look forward for volume three of the “Beautiful Beauty Bloggers” series coming to you soon!! I love the feedback I get from the series, and love to unite bloggers together from different niches, so hopefully we can do this again for you guys!

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers V2: How to Get the Most Out of Your Beauty Products – Guest Post

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - Day 4Today is the fourth day of Pearls and Polkadots’ “Beautiful Beauty Bloggers: Volume 2” series! I have Adrianna from East Eclectic  guest posting today! All of her posts are full of life and inspiration and I certainly recommend hopping on over to her blog to give some of her posts a read! Adrianna is going to tell you a little bit about some DIY methods to making your beauty products last (and do a little myth busting as well…)

There are tons of tips on how to save money by creating DIY combinations of your leftover beauty products. The bad news? Most of them don’t work. The good news? I tried six of them so that you don’t have to!

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

1. Eye drops x Mascara

This has been making rounds on the web for years. The idea is that by adding eye drops or saline solution to a dried out mascara, you can revive the old tube and keep using it.

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

This does work, and very well, however you should not be using this to add moisture back to old mascara. Mascara should not be used for longer than three months, so if any of your tubes are this old, just buy a new one.

However, some mascaras (especially the ‘natural’ mascaras like the one pictured) start drying out after only a month, and in circumstances like those, adding some eye drops or saline totally helps. I used some anti-allergy eyedrops I had on hand. Pictured below is with and without the addition of eye drops:

2. Chapstick x Lipstick

For this one I used a bit of Covergirl lip balm, that was just sitting in my drawer, going unused, and an E.L.F. lipstick, that I wasn’t too crazy about.

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

I used the end of a plastic spoon to scoop out the balm from its container and to break off part of the lipstick. I put them both in a small ceramic saucer and placed them in the microwave for 30 seconds, until they were all melty.

I poured it into a small, clean eye shadow container and let it sit for five minutes, until it was cooled. This worked perfectly well, it created a nice tinted balm. I’d recommend using a softer lipstick though, the one I used was a lip crayon, and while this did work, I’d prefer it were a little easier to spread.

3. Eyeshadow x Clear Coat

The next thing I tried was creating my own nail polish color. It has been rumored that if you mix an eyeshadow color with some clear nail polish, you can create an all new polish.

This is pretty plausible, but didn’t work for me. I tried this two times, one with a regular eye shadow from the pan and another with a fine loose glitter.

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

The regular eyeshadow, the blue one to the left, was quite a challenge. First, I emptied the eye shadow from the pan into a paper bowl. I mashed the eyeshadow into powder, and then poured in some clear coat. This one came out lumpy and was really hard to spread on the nail. I did like the color but I just couldn’t get the eye shadow back into a fine enough powder.

The next one I tried was with a very fine gold glitter powder. Since it was already in powder form, I just mixed it with the clear coat in another bowl.

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

This one came out way better, and was much less clumpy. However, it was still pretty difficult to spread, even when I added more clear coat.

The myth? Plausible. You can make your own polish color, yes, but I think you’re better off just looking for the color you love. Nail polish comes in SO many colors now and there are tons of super affordable options.

4. Foundation x Moisturizer

The purpose of this combination is to create a sheer foundation look with moisturizer mixed in to your foundation. This is something I do a lot of days when I’m in a rush or can’t find/ don’t have a light BB cream on hand.

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

By mixing in some moisturizer to your foundation, you lighten the coverage, make it easier to spread and don’t risk drying out the skin.

This did work for me, but since I do this quite often, I wasn’t expecting it not to. I think this is a perfect alternative if you only have heavy coverage foundations on hand or your skin has been drier than usual. It does take a few extra minutes to set, but nothing major. Here’s with the lotion added (top swatch) and the original foundation (bottom swatch):

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

5. Bronzer x Lotion

Don’t try this at home, seriously. It’s awful. The bronzer doesn’t spread evenly and gets really sticky when mixed with lotion. Just buy a self-tanner and skip this awkward mess.

6. Hair Dye x Shampoo

When you bleach your hair, in order to get rid of the brassy tones, it’s recommended that you use a purple shampoo to help tone the hair. By mixing leftover purple hair dye with shampoo, you can supposedly “create your own”.

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

This was another fail.

The dye stains your hands and skin, and doesn’t do a great job of toning. Instead of wasting perfectly good hair dye and shampoo, save your leftover dye (it’s not going to go bad) for another dye job and just buy the purple shampoo.

7. Lotion x Perfume

My last and final experiment was mixing unscented lotion with perfume, the purpose being to prolong use of a perfume sample.

Beautiful Beauty Bloggers - East Eclectic

This did work, however I don’t like to put lotion on before I go out somewhere, so it wasn’t a great fit for me. However, if you have a tube of unscented lotion and you’d like to make use of a perfume sample, use about 1/3 of a tube for every 8 ounces of lotion.

I didn’t notice any change in consistency in the lotion I used with the perfume tester, and this is a good way to add a fragrance you like to any lotion, especially if many fragrance additives in scented lotion irritate you.

Have you guys tried any of these DIY hacks? Did any of them work for you? Let me know in the comments below…
