Perfectly Pearly

It’s been a busy year thus far! I have had to put blogging on the back burner, but I am coming back strong. I am on the home stretch in finishing my two year teaching certificate and am currently in placement right now. It has definitely been a long two years. However, in just a few short months, I will officially be a certified elementary school teacher (wow that feels good to say!). Woohoo!

When it comes to my personal style, I am all over the place. I love styling my outfits after celebrities, but I also love that ultra-classic and conservative look sometimes as well. It’s good to mix things up with your wardrobe, depending on your mood. Sometimes I feel like being uber-casual (well, most of the time…). However, sometimes I like to dress it up and look snazzy.

It’s always a bonus to find a piece that can be dressed up or dressed down. A piece that is comfy, but also has a bit of flare as well. That’s exactly what popped into my head when I saw this gorgeous knit from Shein. There are a bunch of similar styles bopping around on the internet, but this one was my favourite and I will tell you why. The pearls are an obvious obsession for me, but the sleeves were the draw for selecting this item.

Ruffles aren’t my usual go-to…but these ruffle sleeves absolutely make the sweater stand out. I love them – they are probably the most fun pair of sleeves I own (Can sleeves be fun? They sure can…). Because this ruffled sweater is such a stand out piece, I really made it the focus of my dressed down ensemble. To keep in tune with the casual vibe, I chose jeans, my winter boots and a cute hat to go along with the piece. You could absolutely dress this piece up if you wanted to with some stylish dress pants, or even a short skirt of some kind!!

I get a lot of questions about smaller online boutique brands. Are they safe to order from? Do the clothes fit true to size? Do you receive the items quickly? I am a big supporter of small online boutiques. Most of my most favourite and unique pieces come from online shops like Shein. Shein is one online shop that I love to order from – the prices are affordable, the styles are current and the shipping is relatively quick. I received my items in roughly three weeks! Not bad, if you ask me!

Shein has so many current and stylish pieces in shop right now, and the best thing is that they are always marking items down! It’s a great little secret that I am sharing with the world. Go get your trend on with Shein and upgrade your closet – you won’t regret it!

Here’s a pearl of wisdom: Shop Shein!

Pumpkin Spice in the City

Happy New Year everybody! I hope that the start to your 2018 has been marvelous so far! Mine has included enjoying the rest of my holiday break, watching a whole lot of Friends reruns, and finishing up the holiday baking (oops!). I consider my new year to start when I start back at school…

Sweater: c/o Hope’s (similar) / Jeans: Old Navy / Boots: Winners / Scarf: Winners

I received so many lovely gifts this holiday season, all of which have been incorporated into my 2018 closet. This oversized sweater dress I am sporting today is definitely at the top of my list. Gifted to me by the lovely online boutique, Hope’s, I fell in love with this piece as soon as I unwrapped it.

I have been following Hope’s for years! I started following this boutique on Instagram (@shophopes) and Snapchat (shophopes) when I started my blog (almost three years ago!!). Every time a new collection comes out, I pretty much look like the heart emoji! This Pumpkin Spice sweater dress was at the top of my wish list, but I am styling a different look than the typical sweater dress ensemble…

Sweater dresses are incredibly versatile. You can wear them as dresses (which is probably the simplest way), or you can dress it down. Since temps in Toronto are downright frigid right now, bare legs are not an option. So I put my thinking cap on, and looked at it from a different angle.

I styled this sweater dress with jeans and over-the-knee boots. While the jeans dress the look down, the heeled OTK boots dress the look up. This is a cute and casual look that is great for multiple occasions. I additionally thought that you could style the dress with tights and high knee boots (which would work), but didn’t fit my personal style.

It is such a simple look to style, mainly because the sweater dress is such a cute piece! It is the focus of the entire outfit. I love Hope’s! They always bring hip, trendy and current styles to the forefront. What you see in their boutique, and on their media channels are true to size, true to look and completely what you want in a cute, fashionable brand. What is additionally great is they feature their pieces in styled looks on their social media (so if you aren’t sure about how to style a certain item…there are examples to choose from!!).

There are new styles in stock all of the time and the turnover is great! Unfortunately, this particular sweater dress is not available online anymore, however, they have several sweater dresses of a similar style currently in stock.

Pick your next look with Hope’s to kick off your 2018!

Shimmering into 2018!

Here we are, about to close another interesting, exciting and fun year! So much has changed in my life since one year ago today, and I am happy to say all for the better. I can’t say that I accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish in 2017…but that is what a new year is for. Accomplishing your goals, and setting even bigger ones!

Evening Dress: c/o Pink Blush / Shoes: Aldo

New Years Eve is such a magical…holiday? (I don’t know if I consider it an official holiday or not). It is a time to reflect and look back upon all of the amazing moments you had with friends, family and individually. It’s also a time to look your best, whether you’re going out on the town or staying in by the fire. I want to first say that this look is completely outside of my comfort zone. Sexy, sequin gowns aren’t my usual (even on NYE!), but when I saw this come out in their boutique…I just had to have it. It was love at first sight!

It is such a breath taking piece and looks exactly like it does on their online boutique! The sequins capture the light perfectly, so wherever you are, you are the star of the show. I like to throw third pieces on a lot of my looks to jazz them up a bit, but that is the great thing about this gown…you don’t need to!  In fact, I think it may be overkill if you did. I styled this independently because it really is just stunning on its own.

When I set out to find a look for NYE 2017, I thought of Pink Blush immediately. They always have showstopping picks that completely liven up your wardrobe. This dress is one of many, many sequin pieces they have right now in a variety of styles. Aren’t a fan of the jaw dropping, attention grabbing gown? You can go for a lightly accented sequin blouse or sweater. Those are always fun as well!

The possibilities are endless. Now, because this year is absolutely frigid cold (-30! Yikes!), I would opt for a faux fur wrap or some kind of shimmery wrap for my shoulders. You can’t ignore cold warnings and you don’t want to be shivering on a night you look so fabulous! Just keep in mind, with a dress like this, you don’t want to take any attention away from those shining sequins!

Bundle up and keep warm this NYE! See you in 2018!

Christmas Fun in the Snow

There is snow on the ground, the Christmas tree is lit, and my kitchen smells of baked chocolate chip cookies! It feels as if this season, Christmas has gone on forever. I say that with happiness because this is one of my favourite holidays of the year!! With the holidays being so cheery, I like to make sure my outfits are right in line with the holiday theme!

Sweater Coat: Dex / Sweater: J.Crew Factory / Leggings: c/o Du North Designs Ltd. / Boots: L.L. Bean / Camp Socks: Roots

Today, I am sporting these super fun reindeer leggings! All of my fun printed leggings come from Du North Designs Ltd.a Canadian company based out of Alberta. I can always count on Du North to provide me cozy leggings to lounge around in (and for the holiday season…that’s exactly what I need!)

Cozy style is my go-to, especially when running errands, baking cookies and preparing for such a busy holiday such as Christmas. If I could have one pair of Christmas leggings for every single day of the month…I would. However, these are my favourite pair by far!!

I decided to keep a comfortable vibe with this look and pair the black fair isle pattern with my red buffalo check sweater. I got this sweater for my birthday after many, many hints to my Mom and Dad (hints that weren’t exactly needed, I found out later…) and it is the best sweater I own. Now, many people don’t seem to think you can wear a pattern on top of another pattern…I am not one of those people.

Pattern mixing is a trend that hasn’t gone out of style. At least, not in my closet. I love to mix and match, trying new combinations to see what I like best! These patterns go great together because they aren’t overwhelmingly big patterns. Buffalo check plaid is a chunky pattern. Fair aisle is more of a graphic pattern and really tight knit. There really is no rhyme or reason to pattern mixing…you just have to go with what you feel.

There are so many fun patterns to look through at Du North Designs! I suggest you take a look through their online catalog and find some for yourself – you definitely will not regret it (seriously, they are the most comfortable pairs of leggings I own).

Merry Christmas!

My Magical Stay at the Hazelton Hotel

My Magical Stay at the Hazelton Hotel - Pearls and Polkadots

One of my recent goals in life has been to take my blogging to the next level and expand into exploring different lifestyles and areas of interest. One of those areas is traveling. I haven’t had many opportunities to travel since I have been so focused on school for the past six years. However, as I approach the closing of that chapter, I am excited to explore new opportunities and check a few things off of my bucket list!!

I come from a Toronto born family and growing up, I often visited my relatives in Toronto. However, I have never had the experience of a staycation in Toronto where I can really explore the city. Which brings me to today’s post…

Last weekend, I packed my bags and headed to Yorkville Village, where I met Annie from Fashion and Beauty Inc. to endure a one night stay at the Hazelton Hotel. The Hazelton Hotel is a posh, upscale, boutique hotel that has all of the amenities for a five star stay! Upon arrival, my bags were taken to the room and I was given a tour of our executive suite. My Magical Stay at the Hazelton Hotel - Pearls and Polkadots

The executive suite is absolutely stunning. With it’s cutting edge, modern interior, you feel relaxed and right at home at the same time. Annie arrived shortly after me, and that’s when all of the fun began! We chatted, looked at menu after menu before quickly deciding that room service for dinner and late night snacks was definitely the primary option for our stay!

I should mention that the Hazelton does have a fabulous restaurant (ONE restaurant) in the lobby of the hotel. However, for us, the perfect night included cozying up in PJ’s, turning on some reality television and indulging on gourmet room service (but I will get into that soon…).

After a couple of hours of catching up, exploring the hotel and relaxing in our room, we decided it was time to place an order for dinner. It took us a while to decide exactly what our preferences were for our very first meal. However, we settled on two amazing mains and appetizers to accompany.

I was pretty set on steak, as this is always my go-to when I need a satisfying and filling meal. I had the five ounce, which was plenty. For my appetizer, I had the lobster spoons (which honestly, were a meal in and of itself). Can you believe I have never had lobster before? Obviously I loved it and could have had another platter all to myself!

After dinner, we lounged some more and caught up with each other. Annie and I only get to see each other a few times a year. This is primarily because we go to school in completely opposite parts of the province, so after roughly 5 months of not actually seeing each other…there was so much to catch up on!!

Later that night, it was time to test some dessert. Dessert is usually my favourite part of the meal. We went a little crazy and split three desserts.

The Boston Cream donuts were absolutely magical. Magical pieces sent from heaven above, I think. The sweet custard filling, and toppings of chocolate icing and toffee. As soon as we finished them, I instantly craved more!

To add to the dessert fun, we also drooled over the Yogurt Pana Cota, which was delicious. Orange sorbet, topped with poppy seed meringue and some zest to make the flavour pop, it was the perfect late night satisfaction!

Finally, Annie and I indulged on a multitude of fruit and sorbet, tasting all of the flavours on the menu: Margarita, Sour Cherry, and Orange. I don’t normally choose sorbet, but it was just the tangy flavour I needed!

After a long evening of talking and enjoying multiple room service spreads, it was time to hit the sheets. And did we ever. The bed was turned down just to our liking and was completely prepared for us to sleep at any time. I slept like a baby (which was well needed, since we had a long day of shopping beginning in the morning).

Waking up, I felt completely well rested, and honestly wished I had slept a little bit longer. We quickly got ready, and went to explore the pool! It was the most serene pool I have ever been in. The calming music, the warmth of the air, and the luxurious area, I felt right at home! We spent majority of our morning here, before we headed back to the room for breakfast.

Since Annie and I are both into well prepared dishes and tasty food, we were anticipating an amazing breakfast. Boy, did we ever get it! I had the Cinnamon French Toast and Annie had the Eggs Benedict. Both extremely filling and satisfying.

We also (to our pleasure) made sure to order some pastries from the bakery so that we could really experience the full breakfast experience. Did we ever…well, I’ll let the pictures tell the story from here on…

It’s safe to say that our in-room breakfast was my absolute favourite part of our stay at the Hazelton. From there, we packed our bags and headed out to Yorkville Village to explore. Being that Annie is from Toronto, she is pretty familiar with Yorkville Village, so she took me around to some of our favourites (Kate Spade, Tiffany’s, etc.).

My time spent at the Hazelton was completely and totally magical, and I felt pampered beyond belief. I hope to stay again soon, and definitely recommend this little boutique hotel to anyone who is looking to visit!

You will feel like royalty in this posh, upscale hotel.
