Flying Away in Style

The day has finally come. I am boarding the plane and taking off to Florida!! I have been counting down the days and here it is…time to go. This is marking the beginning of my travelling escapades since I haven’t really been anywhere, so (if you can’t tell) I am super excited.

The upside? I am taking off in something super comfy!! I like putting comfort first for travel, which is why I have opted for a casual tee, some jogger pants and some comfy jogger shoes. Although comfort is my priority when dressing for travel, I like to throw a bit of style in there too!

I decided to layer the look with a denim jacket so that if it gets chilly, I’m warm and if I get hot, I can peel it off and stash it in my carry-on. Comfy shoes is a must and sneakers are the best to travel in when looking for comfort first.

I am so excited to share this journey with you..which is why I am introducing a brand new feature on Pearls and Polkadots: the “Photo Journey” page. I will be posting a running page of photos with a story or caption to go along with it to keep you all updated on the sights I see, the adventures I take, and of course…the Florida style!

Bon Voyage!

Nude Monochrome

From time to time, I like putting a more professional spin on my looks, regardless if I need to look professional or not. Nude tones are really in right now and that’s what inspired me to assemble this semi-professional, cute nude look! Obviously, the nude coloured jacket is the focal point of this look…but the neutral accessories just build it up!

I am definitely a fan of the matchy-match type outfits. That is why I matched the heels and tote to the blazer. It makes for a very uniform looks, and what better a colour to highlight than this beautiful tone. With any monochrome look, you either want to go full force with the tones, or break it up a bit.

This striped black and white tee was the perfect buffer to all the neutral tones in the look. Throwing a pattern amongst a monochrome look is always a good idea, and I particularly love stripes, so this was the perfect option.

I am also really loving boyfriend jeans these days. I used to be totally against the ripped trend, but it has definitely grown on me. Boyfriend jeans add an element of edge to the look!

Happy Thursday!

Met Gala 2016 Review

It has been one year since I did my first red carpet review, which started with the superbowl of all red carpet fashion events – the Met Gala. Every year, celebrities gather to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and this year, no one was left disappointed. High fashion was sported, amazing styles were showcased and I was in awe of all the metallic fabric. Why so much metallic? Well, the theme of course, which was technology.

So let’s get to the review, shall we? I picked ten of my favourite looks from the red carpet this year that I am going to detail here and tell you why I love them!

Blake Lively

Even with the baby bump, Blake Lively is looking gorgeous in her blush pink gown by Burberry. She swept us all away with the maroon accents and the gorgeous bloom patterns on the skirt and peaking above the bust line. I am a huge Blake fan and so I couldn’t be more of a fan of this Met Gala look.

Jessica Chastain

Elegance is one of the words I would use to describe Jessica Chastain in this jaw-dropping dress. Although she didn’t really follow the theme of the night, she still stole the red carpet with this beautiful and classic gown by Prada. Whenever black lace is paired with a cool tone like blue, you have to be careful to not look too harsh, but this was done very tastefully and the subtle jewelry won her some points as well!

Emma Watson

I am really loving this modern look that Emma Watson sported down the red carpet on Monday night. This two toned black and white dress by Calvin Klein is perfect for Emma’s figure and I think the off the shoulder detail is my favourite part. It’s sexy and elegant at the same time!

Kendall Jenner

I’ve heard a lot of opinions on Kendall Jenner’s dress. Some think it looks like a bathing suit cover up, others absolutely are swooning over it. I have to say, I think she is killing it with this red carpet look by Versace. It is simple, beautiful and adds that modern touch that everyone is into right now. We would expect nothing less from Kenny herself.

Demi Lovato

It seems as if Demi Lovato is getting totally overlooked in the reviews I have read, which is why I am definitely going to highlight her look here. Although it is very bright and metallic…I think this dress by Moschino was showstopping. It stuck with the theme, it is extremely flattering and completely show stopping in a classic cut way! I think Demi deserves a gold star for this red carpet look…I am a total fan!

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

I am all about the white gowns this year and Gugu Mbatha-Raw look gorgeous head to toe dressed in white by Gabriela Hearst. Embracing the technology theme with her metallic stripe down the side of her arm, the subtly is elegant and graceful and I am loving the entire ensemble.

Bella Hadid

Stealing the focus from her sister, Gigi, Bella Hadid totally had the carpet’s attention with this gorgeous and slinky black gown by Givenchy. Bella looks sophisticated and chic in this Met Gala look and I have to say, I am loving the thigh high stockings to go along with it – uber trendy!

Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson has always been one of my fave celebrities – especially on the red carpet. I love the angular cuts in this Atelier Versace gown. It really accentuates her figure and the angles used throughout the dress is completely within the technology theme.

Kate Upton

Never disappointing, Kate Upton looks super cute in this shimmering gown by Topshop. Off the shoulder, one shoulder, bare shoulders is super in trend right now, and Kate is not shying away from a bare left shoulder. I couldn’t be happier with this shiny and dazzling ensemble. I also have to give a shout out to her glam squad because her hair and make up are completely on point.

Claire Danes

Okay, being a huge fan of Cinderella…there was no question that Claire Danes’ look is the winner of the night. It’s elegant in the day and a party at night. Literally, lighting up the entire night with this gown by Zac Posen. You can’t really get closer to Cinderella than this and I am a huge fan.

I like to detail the best dressed and the worst dressed of the red carpets I review…but honestly, when it comes to the Met Gala, worst is unique and best is creative…they are all kind of in the same pot! Besides, I don’t like to be mean…so there you have it!

Casual Look for a Fashion Show

A couple of weeks ago, I got to go to our annual “Style at Mac” fashion show! I did a two part coverage (click here and here to read it all)! It was such a blast and I had so much fun seeing all the cool styles that walked down the runway. One of my favourite parts about going out to events is dressing up. I love assembling looks that I have never worn before and that night, I assembled a cute and casual look that (in my opinion) totally slayed.

There were so many great looks that night! One of my favourite pieces of this look was my Aldo Hot Pink Lace Up Heels. Not only are they bright, they are the life of the party and surprisingly very comfortable! I am really into the lace up pieces these days (flats, heels, clutches, etc.) and so these babies certainly fit the bill!

Pairing the jean jacket with the little black dress was something that I was a little hesitant about – especially for a fashion show. Whenever you wear something denim, it can be seen as super casual because denim is a rather casual fabric. However, I think that without the jean jacket, the dress might have been missing something, and so pairing that third piece (even if it was casual) was definitely better than wearing the dress solo.

What do you think of the denim jacket? Too casual or just the right amount? Let me know in the comments below…

Summer Picks with Anthropologie

It seems I am always getting excited for the next season to come! A month ago, I was going crazy over all of the spring lines and colours and styles…and now I am dreaming of the hot summer sun on my face and basking in gorgeous threads from my favourite stores. I have yet to shop for my summer styles, but Anthropologie‘s new arrivals are looking great! That’s why today, I am going to show you my picks from their new line:

Summer Picks with Anthropologie - Pearls and Polkadots

All of these styles can be found at Anthropologie

This season is full of pops of colour – specifically reds and pinks. I am also loving the textures through the fabrics, like the jean and the cork in the wedge sandals. Below, I have put together some perfect looks and potential summer outfit inspo – straight from Anthropologie‘s new line.

Saturday Struttin’

This look is so much fun! I love the patterned top with the denim skirt. Denim skirts are all the rage right now, and for summer…it is the perfect piece for any lady to have in her closet. You can dress it up, dress it down…do whatever you want with it, honestly. I especially love to add a pop of colour when majority of the outfit falls into a neutral colour scheme – keeps the look interesting!

Tassels and Ties

This is such a trendy look for the season. The denim jumper is so in right now, and I love it. I think that denim can be a natural neutral fabric – even though it has a blue hue to it. With any denim texture, you want to pick one colour to make the denim pop. In this case, I picked nude neutrals – the tassel necklace, the sunglasses, the bag and wedges. The tassel necklace is perfect for this look – fun and casual.

Elegant in the Sun

Summer brings elegance and this is a great look to show that. I love this two toned dress in the pink and orange. Pink and orange go great together and look so bright and summery! I have reused the hat, sunglasses and wedges in this look because I think they are great pieces for summer (and I cannot get enough of them). The pink toned sunglasses tie right in with this elegant theme and the crossbody neutral bag is the perfect compliment to the dress!

Cute and Casual

The way I assembled this look was completely around the top. How cute is the detail in this white top? I love pairing white pieces with pops of colour, and those shorts keep in theme with that. With a look like this, you want to beef up on the accessories! The earrings, the sun hat, the bag, and the sandals – all perfectly align with the detail in the shorts and top.

I think the most important thing to keep in mind when adding a piece to your wardrobe is will it work with your other pieces? If it doesn’t go with anything else in your closet, then you are going to have a problem. Think of the chemistry the clothing will have!

What do you think of the summer collection? Which piece is your favourite? Let me know in the comments below…
